Echoes of a Thousand Years

Echoes of a Thousand Years is a documentary film about Hungarian identity that offers a kaleidoscopic view through a series of stories exploring the process of making art by Hungarian artists and musicians. The film covers topics from art & music to history & politics.

To understand art as a fundamental human behavior, we must understand the people who make it, and cannot be studied in a meaningful way outside of that. In this way we empathize with the people and culture. We learn from their unique points of view, their struggles, their successes.

Echoes of a Thousand Years will examine making art in an exploratory way, providing an opportunity through the editorial process to synthesis, to shape the material so the viewer can appreciate a people from the art they create, and through their individual voices.

Art is made by people for people, and can only exists in terms of social interaction. Music, for example, is not only organized sound but it involves behavior of individuals or groups of individuals. It is this behavior, while in the pursuit of artistic expression and musical excellence, that will be explored.

To achieve these objectives, the filmmaker will utilize small, unobtrusive 5K and 6K motion picture and 32 bit float audio equipment.

“We can no longer study music as a thing in itself when research in ethnomusicology makes it clear that musical things are not always strictly musical, and that the expression of tonal relationships in patterns of sound may be secondary to extramusical relationships which the tones represent.” John Blacking
